Nonprofit governance places unique demands on leadership and management.

Our Board and Advisors work alongside staff to ensure strategies are aligned with mission and vision. They seek continuous improvement, and always ask for metrics and indicators of success. Innovation is in our name on purpose, and is its own category in our organizational development and program planning.

Amy Pearl - Executive Director and CEO

Amy is the executive director and co-founder of Springboard Innovation. She draws on extensive experience in the education, corporate, and social sectors to shape her vision of addressing global challenges with interdisciplinary problem solving. By designing learning experiences to teach social entrepreneurship skills and strategies to youth and adults in high-need, underserved communities worldwide, she hopes to build a more equitable, innovative, and capable society. Her own career has taken her from the classroom and school district to the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, to managing international education initiatives online for Intel.

Steve Burt - Board Chair
Co-founder of Springboard Innovation, Steve has extensive experience in developing new technology solutions for the benefit of learners and organizations. A former high school teacher and administrator, he manages content and research for Clarity Innovations, Inc. an educational consulting firm whose clients range from school districts to international technology companies. A frequent conference presenter, Steve pays close attention to emerging technologies that open new possibilities for learning and problem solving in developing countries.

Paul Osterlund - Vice Chair
Paul recently joined the Board of Directors following his retirement from Intel Corporation after 23 years working in design, engineering, and educational roles. He designed products, concepts, and developed facilities and educational programs including the Intel Oregon Innovation Center, designed for middle school classes to demystify and inspire visitors through hands-on access to sophisticated PC technology. He worked with MIT's Media Lab and Boston's Museum of Science to expand their Clubhouse model to a worldwide program of after-school facilities, offering professional quality PC-based technology in creative project-based learning environments serving youth in communities of high need. Paul is now Executive Director of the Abundance Farming Project, a social enterprise that provides technical solutions for subsistence farmers to increase food crop yields.

Dan Sheil - Treasurer
Dan works at Intel where he is a financial advisor to senior management. He joins Springboard Innovation as the Treasurer and as a financial expert and guide. Dan has been in the PeaceCorps, speaks Swahili, is a marathon runner, and volunteers with a number of organizations. He recently returned from Mongolia where he helped build houses with Habitat for Humanity.

Aaron Ray - Secretary
Aaron Ray joins Springboard Innovation as he leaves one successful career in IT and education and moves on to community development, uniting the three interests by being involved in ChangeXchange and Springboard Innovation's governance. His professional background includes evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies in both large and small organizations, as well as extensive technology management experience. More recently, he has worked with community organizations such as 1,000 Friends of Oregon to conduct community outreach and awareness projects. Aaron received his degree in Community Development from Portland State University, and is continuing his studies in the graduate City and Regional Planning program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Jane Krauss - Director
Jane is a long-time educator, curriculum writer, and expert in professional development. An innovative teacher and early adopter of instructional technologies, Jane and her elementary classroom were showcased in a video case study that thousands of teachers have used to learn about authentic, project-based learning. As former director of professional development for the International Society for Technology in Education and a consultant for Intel’s education initiative, she has helped educators around the world improve their practice. She recently published a book on the effective use of technology in education, entitled Reinventing Project-Based Learning.

Warren Karmol - Director
Warren joined the board in 2008 with an extensive background in youth entrepreneurial education.  He has worked with the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership on numerous projects over the course of 10 years and he co-founded the Youth Entrepreneurial Initiative (YEDI) program.  This learning  by doing  project focused on teaching teen age youth in the Republic of Georgia how to transition to a market economy as a small business owner from a command economy after the fall of the Soviet Union   This experience combined with his varied personal entrepreneurial ventures in both the profit and the non-profit arenas over the past 25 years add a unique perspective to the board.

Ruthe Farmer - Director
Ruthe recently completed her MBA at the Said School of Business in Oxford, England. This program offers a special emphasis on social entrepreneurship. Before that Ruthe directed science, technology, engineering, and math initiatives for the Girl Scouts of the USA in New York. Ruthe brings a wealth of experience in informal education, with a special focus on programs that expand opportunities for girls and young women. She is on the Champions Board of the National Girls Collaborative Project, is a member of the Girls' FIRST Advisory Council, and now works as Director of Strategic Initiatives at the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). Ruthe brings a global perspective about the potential of young people to make a difference in the world.

Tom Bennett
Tom has been involved in Springboard Innovation since its inception, adding expertise in technology, strategy, marketing, planning, and the use of new social media tools. He has spent nearly 20 years in the field of strategic information delivery. Currently the leader of the Technology Center at The New Group, a marketing firm with an international portfolio, he combines new and emerging technologies with proven strategies to create innovative solutions. In addition to extensive business sector experience, he has managed the development of technology products for K-12 education. Tom believes that technology best serves when it is appropriate, scaleable, and designed to meet a specific need.

Charles Patton, Ph.D.
Charlie is a senior scientist for SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. In his current group, the Center for Technology and Learning (CTL), he helps build a technology bridge from research to practice. He works to apply innovation processes into the intersection of technology and learning, and brings years of critical knowledge and experience to LITC's work.

After completing his Ph.D. in the mathematics of quantum gravity at Stony Brook, with additional work at Oxford's Mathematical Institute, and France's I.H.E.S, spending a year as the first AMS Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Charlie was struck by the value of handheld technology when applied in education. Since then he has worked on numerous research projects in the areas of technology, learning, learning environments, and innovation.

Laura Peterson
Laura Peterson is the Founder and Executive Director of Hands to Hearts International (HHI), founded in 2004 to reach the world's neediest children. The mission of HHI is to empower women and to nurture children. Laura has spent her career healing children, including serving as Clinical Director for a non-profit serving children with severe mental health issues and acting as a faculty member at the College of Public Health at Oregon State University. In May of 2006 Laura received the "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Outcomes Award" from Wisdom University in honor of her impact on global humanitarian issues. Soroptimist International of Portland awarded Laura its 2007-2008 Making a Difference Award for Women, honoring women who are making a difference in the lives of women.

Eric Maher
Eric joins the Advisory Board of Springboard as a financial and sustainability expert. As a representative with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Eric works with clients to identify their financial security needs and then focuses on solutions that can help meet their financial goals. He has a strong interest in helping organizations become financially sustainable, especially those that are making a difference in the world. He works with local community organizations and helps them connect to resources and ideas.
